Baccalaureate Second Degree Program 12-month Medical Technology Track

The College of Health Related Professions of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) created an accelerated 12-month, baccalaureate second degree program that started fall semester of 2004.  The program is designed for students with a bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, microbiology or related science field from any accredited college or university.  One class per year will be admitted and due to space limitations, only a small number of students will be accepted.  This intensive program includes two semesters of professional curriculum at UAMS and approximately 16 weeks of clinical experience in central Arkansas.  Students complete the clinical experience at one of the following sites:

·         Little Rock, University Hospital of Arkansas or at the Department of Veterans Affairs, Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System

·         Pine Bluff, Jefferson Regional Medical Center

·         Conway, Conway Regional Health System

·         Hot Springs, St. Joseph’s Mercy Health Center

Graduates receive a Bachelor of Science degree in medical technology and are eligible to apply for national certification examinations given by ASCP and NCA.  To be considered for admission, applications should meet the following qualifications:

·         Bachelor’s degree to include the following core courses:

a.      16 semester hours of biology, including microbiology and anatomy and physiology (courses must include laboratory credit)

b.      8 semester hours of general chemistry (courses must include laboratory credit)

c.      3 semester hours of college algebra (or higher level mathematics)

d.      3 semester hours of American history or national government

e.      3 semester hours of humanities

·         Courses may not be survey or remedial

·         Minimum grade point average of 3.0 in math/science courses and in general education courses  (4.0 scale) 

Admission to the 12-month, baccalaureate second degree program is based on college grade point average and personal interviews.
