The Profession
The radiologist assistant (RA) is a new advanced practice imaging
sciences professional educated to assist the radiologist in the delivery
of high quality health care. Shortages of radiologic technologists and
radiologists, a soaring demand for imaging procedures, and the rapid
expansion of new technology have made the RA a desirable and sought
after health care professional.
The RA is an American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)
certified radiographer who has completed an advanced academic program
and works as a physician extender under the supervision of the
radiologist. As an advanced-level practitioner, the RA helps to improve
productivity, increase patient access to radiologic services, enhance
the quality of patient care, and ensure a high quality diagnostic
imaging environment.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
The U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics expects
employment in the radiologic imaging sciences to grow faster than the
average for all occupations through 2012. Advances in technology, the
aging of the population, and increases in the demand for health care
will ensure the continuing need for diagnostic imaging professionals.
RAs may work for radiology physician groups or, especially in rural
areas, hospitals may employ RAs. Radiology groups and hospitals may also
share the employment of RAs.
