Professional Curriculum
The courses taken at UAMS are the Health
Information Management (HIM) courses listed on the left below. Students take the General Education
(GE) courses listed below at any regionally accredited college or university of their choice, and these are transferred to UAMS
as they are completed. Students may take the General Education courses before or during the time they are enrolled in the HIM program. The HIM program director provides a Curriculum Plan of Study, which is individualized for every student upon his or her admission into the program. Thus, students may enter this program directly out of high school with no prerequisites
or students can enter into the program with several of their GE courses already completed. Any remaining
GE courses that are needed to be taken are placed into the Curriculum
Plan while the student is taking the HIM courses, so that upon
graduation all courses are completed at the same time. There is no time
limit for the GE courses that a student transfers into the program with the exception of the computer science course. This course cannot have been completed more than seven (7) years prior to the date the student applies for admission to the HIM program. This is due to the rapidly changing technology that has occured in the computer science field.

Job Placement:
Although our program does not officially have a job placement
program, faculty are routinely made aware of numerous job opportunities by preceptors, local HIM directors, hospitals, and statewide
agencies who contact us throughout the year because of their interest in our graduates. We list these job
opportunities for our students and graduates. All of our students and graduates have
equal opportunity to apply for any and all of these jobs, which are located both locally and throughout the states as they become known to us. They vary in position, salary, type, and
qualifications. In recent years the number of job openings has significantly exceeded the number of our graduates, offering them many employment opportunities.
Credentials:
Most of our graduates take the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
credentialing examination within six months of graduation, so that all the knowledge and skills they gained in the program are very fresh in their minds. The program also offers a summer review session to all the graduates for the RHIT examination following graduation. For the past five years, graduates of our program have achieved a 100 percent pass rate on the national examination.
