The students will
use an overall summary worksheet to log their total hours worked within
the registry setting. The clinical preceptor will sign off on each hour
the student worked. Grades are reported on the grade worksheet for each
activity.
Can Work Experience
within a Cancer Registry Satisfy the Clinical Requirements of this
Cancer Track Program?
The directed hands-on practice of the cancer registry track was
developed to focus on all aspects of the cancer registry, including the
hospital-based and the central (state) registry. The student may not
take this course until the other three courses of the registry track
have been completed. Thus, all of the theory of the registry is known
to the student from having the three cancer registry courses completed
before doing the professional practice rotations. The course instructor
acts as the guide and overseer for this course and works with the
student on an individualized basis throughout the semester. Students
create their own schedule as far as obtaining the required 160 clock
hours within this course. The use of a spreadsheet aids the student in
tracking the number of hours they perform for each required activity
which is done throughout the semester. Students obtain the clinical
site preceptor?s signature as verification of the hours worked as well
as the completed evaluation form and the grade for the activities done
with that preceptor. These are submitted to the course instructor and
kept in the student?s file as verification of the clock hour and
competencies requirements as given by the NCRA.
No credit is given
for previous work experience toward the coursework requirements
for students who currently work within a cancer registry. However,
those working in a hospital registry currently may use their regular
work time (as permitted by their employer) in these required hours.
Note, hours needed within a COC-approved registry may not be
worked in a non COC-approved registry to satisfy this requirement.
