The Program

PROGRAM LOCATIONS

The UAMS Department of Dental Hygiene has a program in Little Rock on the UAMS campus and a distant location on the campus of Arkansas State University Mountain Home (ASUMH).  Dental hygiene students at the distant location are enrolled as UAMS students and receive the didactic (classroom) portion of the curriculum via interactive video from UAMS.  UAMS faculty at the ASUMH location provide laboratory and clinical instruction.  The ASUMH distant location enjoys significant support from ASUMH and the UAMS Area Health Education Center-North Central (AHEC-NC).

DEGREES OFFERED

The UAMS Department of Dental Hygiene offers both Associate of Science and Bachelor of Science degree options. Graduation from either option qualifies the student to apply for state, regional, and national examinations required for licensure. Students enrolled at the ASUMH location do not have the AS degree option.

The program requires 39 SC (semester credits) of prerequisite course work to be completed prior to admission to the dental hygiene program.  The dental hygiene program consists of 68 SC distributed over two (2) academic years (two fall and two spring semesters plus an intervening 4-week summer session).

For students at the ASUMH location and those students at the Little Rock location desiring a BS degree, an additional 13 SC of course work must be completed prior to graduation from the dental hygiene program.  These additional 13 SC include 6 SC of general education course work and another 7 SC of upper-division (junior/senior) course work beyond the dental hygiene curriculum for a total of 120 SC.

AS degree requirements:  39 SC prerequisite courses and 68 SC DH curriculum                                       (107 SC total) – available to students in the Little
                                                              Rock location only

BS degree requirements:  39 SC prerequisite courses and 68 SC DH curriculum                                     + 6 SC general education requirements + 7 SC upper
                                                level course work
                                      (120 SC total)

 ENROLLMENT

The Department enrolls one class at each of the two program locations each fall semester. The Little Rock class typically numbers thirty-two (32) students, while the ASUMH location admits 5 students each year.

TYPICAL COURSE SCHEDULE

The UAMS dental hygiene program is a full-time, weekday commitment. The program at both locations follows the same general schedule.
