The Program

PROGRAM LOCATIONS

The UAMS Department of Dental Hygiene has a program in Little Rock on the UAMS campus and a distant location on the campus of Arkansas State University Mountain Home (ASUMH).  Dental hygiene students at the distant location are enrolled as UAMS students and receive the didactic (classroom) portion of the curriculum via interactive video from UAMS.  UAMS faculty at the ASUMH location provide laboratory and clinical instruction.  The ASUMH distant location enjoys significant support from ASUMH and the UAMS Area Health Education Center-North Central (AHEC-NC).  Applicants who are residents of the following 10 counties served by the AHEC North Central are given first consideration in admissions to the ASUMH site: Baxter, Independence, Searcy, Van Buren, Izard, Sharp, Cleburne, Marion, Stone, and Fulton.

DEGREES OFFERED

The UAMS Department of Dental Hygiene offers both Associate of Science and Bachelor of Science degree options. Graduation from either option qualifies the student to apply for state, regional, and national examinations required for licensure. Students enrolled at the ASUMH location do not have the AS degree option.

The program requires 34 SC (semester credits) of prerequisite course work to be completed prior to admission to the dental hygiene program.  The dental hygiene program consists of 68 SC distributed over two (2) academic years (two fall and two spring semesters plus an intervening 4-week summer session).

For students at the ASUMH location and those students at the Little Rock location desiring a BS degree, an additional 24 SC of course work must be completed prior to graduation from the dental hygiene program.  These additional 24 SC include 12 SC of general education course work and another 12 SC of upper-division (junior/senior) course work beyond the dental hygiene curriculum for a total of 126 SC.

AS degree requirements:  34 SC prerequisite courses and 68 SC DH curriculum                                       (102 SC total) – available to students in the Little
                                                              Rock location only

BS degree requirements:  34 SC prerequisite courses and 68 SC DH curriculum                                     + 12 SC general education requirements + 12 SC upper
                                                level course work
                                      (126 SC total)

 ENROLLMENT

The Department enrolls one class at each of the two program locations each fall semester. The Little Rock class typically numbers thirty-four (34) students, while the ASUMH location admits five (5) students each year.
