SUGGESTED HAND WASHING PROCEDURES
Initial
Hand Washing
-
Remove all jewelry.

Scrub the hands, nails and forearms with
a liquid germicidal soap* for 2 minutes. Rinse well.

Repeat process for 2 more 10 second
scrubs.

Dry hands first with paper towels, then
forearms. Use the paper towels to turn off the faucets if
hand-controlled.

Optional: Wash with a virulent soap and
rinse.
Between Nonsurgical
Patients
Wash the hands 10 to 15 seconds under
running water, rinse and dry well. Use lotion 3 or 4 times a day.
Surgery Scrub
-
Remove all jewelry
-
Clean nails with a clean plastic wood
stick.

Scrub the hands, nails and forearms with
a liquid germicidal soap and a sterilized brush or sponge for 7
minutes using multiple scrub and rinse cycles.

When rinsing, let the water run toward
the arms, rather than the fingers.
-
Dry with sterile towels and don sterile
gloves using surgical technique.
