Admission Process

To qualify for consideration for admission to the dental hygiene program, the applicant must have met or exceeded the following minimum qualifications:

  • 2.75 cumulative grade point average

  • 2.75 prerequisite grade point average

  • 20 composite ACT score

  • 20 hours of dental office observation

  • Completion of a minimum of 24 SC of the prerequisite coursework by the application deadline

  • Completion of a minimum of two of the three science prerequisite courses by the application deadline

Please do not send letters of recommendation. They are not required for admission and are not considered.

Application Deadline:  All application materials must be received by March 1.  Documentation of all previous college work, including the prerequisite courses, must be provided in the form of official transcripts (i.e., send directly from the institution(s) attended to the admissions office for the dental hygiene program.)* Transcripts provided or delivered by the applicant will not be accepted.  The most qualified applicants will be invited for an interview.

Class Size and Selection: A class of 34 students will be selected for the program on the UAMS campus in Little Rock, and a class of 5 students will be selected for the distant site on the ASUMH campus in Mountain Home. Applicants to the distant site in Mountain Home who are legal residents of any of the following 10 counties served by the UAMS North Central Area Health Education Center (AHEC) will be given first consideration for admission to that site:  Baxter, Independence, Sharp, Van Buren, Izard, Stone, Cleburne, Marion, Fulton, and Searcy.   

Admissions Criteria: Students will be selected from those interviewed according to the admissions criteria listed below. The interview consists of an assessment of both written and verbal skills. Applicants invited for an interview will receive an essay question which is to be completed and returned prior to attending the interview session.
