Richard Zraick
gave a lecture to residents and faculty in the UAMS
Department of Neurology on September 28th, 2009 on the topic of
Classic Aphasia Syndromes.

Richard Zraick
gave a lecture to residents and faculty in the UAMS
Department of Neurology on August 5th, 2009 on the topic of
Communication Deficits after Right Hemisphere Brain Damage.

Stacey Mahurin
gave a presentation on July 16, 2009 about Reading, Writing,
& Spelling Disorders: Identification and Intervention at the
Arkansas Speech and Hearing Association Regional Conference in
Texarkana.

Richard Zraick
served on the guest faculty for two recent symposia held at UAMS:
(1) AR Geriatric Education Center Summer Institute [May 18th]
and (2) Spring Stroke Symposium [June 1st].
- Our first-year
M.S. students hosted a dinner reception in honor of their
graduating peers on April 30th, 2009.
- Richard
Zraick's
leading Voice Disorders textbook was released on March 20th, 2009.

Stacey Mahurin gave a
presentation on June 23rd, 2008 about the Dyslexia Resource Manual
at the Arkansas Association of Special Education Administrators
Summer Conference.
- On May 15th,
2008
the Department hosted its annual Graduation Reception for
our M.S. students and their families. This ceremony was
held at the Bailey Center on the UALR campus from 5:00-7:00PM.

Betholyn Gentry
has been selected to participate in the UALR College
of Professional Studies Leadership Academy in Fall 2008.
-
Diana Odom and
Leslie Miles, second-year M.S.
students, participated on April 25th, 2008 in the Graduate Student
Research Forum sponsored by UALR. Diana and Leslie were awarded
first and second prize, respectively, in the category of
Education. Diana's project compared the text messaging styles
of adolescents in the U.S. and the U.K. and was guided by
Betholyn Gentry. Leslie's
project resulted in the creation of clinical teaching videos
featuring simulated patients portraying unilateral left neglect,
and was guided by Richard Zraick.
- An undergraduate student, Jessica
Williams, participated in the UALR Undergraduate Student Research
Exposition on April 21st, 2008. Her project was directed by
Dr. Betholyn Gentry.
- Betholyn
Gentry, Donna Kelly,
and Laura Smith-Olinde
participated in the UALR College of Professional Studies Faculty
Research Symposium on April 25th, 2008.

On Saturday, February 16th, 2008 the Department
hosted a half-day professional education workshop featuring Dr.
Kathryn Bayles. Dr. Bayles is an ASHA Honoree and an
internationally recognized expert in the assessment and
treatment of cognitive-communication disorders secondary to
dementia.

- Greg Robinson
was featured on KATV
Channel 7 on their 10:00PM news broadcast on July 9th, 2008. He
spoke about baby signing.

- Congratulations to
Terri Hutton, who has been elected
a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
Election to Fellowship in ASHA is one of the highest
honors the professional organization can bestow. To be elected a
Fellow, the nominee must have made outstanding contributions to the
discipline of communication sciences and disorders.
