Message from the Dean
Welcome to the Web pages of UAMS’ College of Health Related Professions, one of six colleges and schools at UAMS. The College of Health Related Professions (CHRP) was founded in 1971, although one of its programs (Medical Technology) began at UAMS in 1918 and another (Radiologic Imaging Sciences) in 1946. The CHRP currently offers programs at various degree and certificate levels in 17 different professional areas. (The CHRP does not offer prerequisite or corequisite courses in the humanities, social sciences, mathematics, chemistry, biology, and so on; they must be taken at a regionally-accredited college or university.) Graduate and undergraduate enrollment in the professional programs currently totals more than 600 students. Some programs are offered only in Little Rock, but many are available in whole or in part at other locations around Arkansas (such as at UAMS’ Area Health Education Centers—AHECs) or online via the Internet to students in Arkansas and other states. All programs in the college require clinical rotations, which may occur in a wide variety of settings, such as hospitals, clinics, and laboratories. You should know that on an overall basis there has recently been an average of about five applicants for each student admitted. While this ratio varies by program and year, and can be as high as 10 to one, admission to each program is competitive. A number of factors are considered in selecting students for our programs, but grade point average (G.P.A.) in previous high school or college work, especially grades earned in specified prerequisites, generally plays a significant role—so it is very important that students considering applying to CHRP programs demonstrate a strong record of achievement in their prerequisite studies. Scores at or above specified levels on certain nationally standardized tests, such as the ACT and GRE, may also be required. In addition, each program in the college has its own rules and criteria for admission. Thus, if you are interested in applying to any of our programs you should go to that program’s Web pages on this site for basic information, and then contact the department chairman for specific guidance. He/she would be happy to advise you as to how you might best proceed to submit a successful application for admission. Remember, however, the admission requirements, tuition and fees, and especially the deadlines for some steps in the process may change from year-to-year, so always be sure you have the most current information. The College of Health Related Professions offers career preparation to suit many different interests—from laboratory work to the patient’s bedside, information management to oral health care, diagnostic imaging to cancer therapy, emergency services to eye care, and genetics to nutrition. Allied health professionals collectively account for about half the total health care workforce in the United States today, and the future is very bright for them in the coming years as the “baby boomers” reach retirement. If you are interested in pursuing one of these dynamic health careers and gaining your education through UAMS—a first class academic medical center—I hope you will contact us in the near future so we can work together to help you achieve your goals.
