As UAMS chancellor, I. Dodd Wilson, M.D., leads Arkansas’ only academic health sciences center, which encompasses patient care, education, research and outreach resources at locations across the state. He became UAMS’ third chancellor in October 2000.

UAMS includes five colleges, a graduate school, a medical center, five centers of excellence and a statewide network of regional centers. UAMS has about 2,320 students and 690 medical residents. It is one of the state’s largest public employers with almost 9,000 employees, including nearly 1,000 physicians who provide medical care to patients at UAMS, Arkansas Children’s Hospital and the John L. McClellan Memorial Veterans Hospital. UAMS and its affiliates have an economic impact in Arkansas of $4.4 billion a year.

Wilson’s vision for UAMS is that it will be a world-class medical sciences center where excellence is the defining characteristic.

In 2005, the chancellor outlined 11 long-range goals for UAMS, an “11 for 2011.” The list identifies how UAMS will work to meet the health care needs of Arkansas through 2011. The goals touch on each of the UAMS missions, with plans for increasing student enrollment, improving patient care programs, enhancing research and expanding the reach of UAMS programs and resources across the state.

“By achieving these goals, we can make a lasting impression on the health of all Arkansans,” Wilson says.

The UAMS campus in Little Rock is in the midst of one of the most significant expansions in its history as it. The expansion projects, totaling more than $250 million, also fit into Wilson’s goals to meet Arkansas health care needs for many years to come with additional space for growing education, patient care, research and community outreach programs.

But UAMS is not about brick and mortar buildings, says the chancellor.

“Our employees are our talent,” Wilson says. “Our talent makes our programs grow. Our programs make our facilities grow. As UAMS grows, so does our ability to impact the state of health in Arkansas.”
