Design, Biostatistics, and Ethics

Core Description2 researchers with computers

The Research Design, Biostatistics, and Clinical Research Ethics (DBE) program component is essential to all CCTR activities. This component seeks to generate feasible, well-designed protocols which produce reliable data to be translated into communities to improve public health. Successful research translation requires scientifically valid study designs and expert biostatistical evaluations and interpretations. In addition, issues of research ethics arise at every stage of clinical and translational research. The DBE component of the Arkansas CCTR is designed to equip investigators (especially junior investigators) with the knowledge and tools necessary to successfully conduct clinical and translational research. By providing front-end assistance for protocol submission, biostatisticians and ethicists in the DBE component facilitate improved study designs and streamlined regulatory approvals. The DBE component also provides investigators with training, education, and innovative tools and approaches to solve new biostatistical and ethical problems that emerge as the research landscape continues to shift toward the paradigm of translational research.
