Health Practice Community Program
UAMS Rural Hospital Program (RHP)
Established in 1991, the RHP pioneered the state’s telehealth efforts. The UAMS
Telehealth Network educational program was created under UAMS Regional Programs
to broadly address health care policies and needs of rural Arkansans. By using
technology to provide ready access to health care education for rural settings,
RHP extended telehealth services into some of the most rural, needy areas of
Arkansas. From its two original network sites, RHP now includes >50 rural
hospital, AHEC, and clinic sites in Arkansas. Hospitals act as a point of
integration for lay, health practice, and academic communities by supporting the
network’s teleconferences. In 2006, RHP held 272 different continuing education
programs by telemedicine, serving 5,820 health care professionals, and broadcast
34 different consumer education programs, with 614 consumer attendees.
