2011 Biennial Meeting

Date:

March 18 -21, 2011

Place:

Crowne Plaza Redondo Beach & Marina Hotel
300 N. Harbor Drive
Redondo Beach, California 90277

Registration deadline :
  March 1, 2011

Meeting format:

The scientific sessions will begin Friday morning, March 18 and continue through the afternoon of Monday, March 21. There will be a closing awards dinner and business meeting on Monday evening at the Crowne Plaza. Thus, in planning your travel, you should plan to arrive by Thursday evening, March 17 and leaving on Tuesday, March 22.

The meeting will once again be 4 days this year with the intent of allowing more time for individual interaction outside of the formal sessions. The meeting organization will be similar to the 2009 meeting and will consist of 10 minute oral presentations with 5 minutes for discussion and poster sessions. Because of significant increase in abstract submissions this year, we will have 3 poster sessions. However, posters for each session will only be displayed from the morning through evening of the desginated day.

There will be only one evening session, on Friday evening.

Awards:
Students and post-doctoral fellows selected for oral presentations will be judged and the best presentation in each category (graduate student and post-doctoral fellow) will receive the San-Pin Wang Award, sponsored by the San-Pin Wang Foundation. The Jane E. Raulston Award willl be presented for the best poster presentation by a graduate student and the best poster presentation by a post-doctoral fellow so that the high quality work in the poster format may be recognized. Obviously, not every abstract could be given as an oral presentation and the decision to include an abstract in a platform session was decided primarily based on content and appropriateness to the topic of the specific session.

Meeting Registration:

Registration and payment of fees will be exclusively through Regonline. If you have already entered information during the abstract submission process, you may now log in and complete the meeting registration. Each attendee must register separately. An investigator cannot register for his/her students. Please note that there will be no on-site registration at the meeting. To register, follow this link to RegOnline. Registration is only available through the RegOnline and payment will only be accepted with credit cards. Note that registering for the meeting does not reserve a room for you. You must reserve a room through the Crowne Plaza website (see below). The regular registration fee for faculty/staff is $635, for graduate students/post docs/undergraduate students, $300, and for non-sponsoring industry attendees, $900. The registration fee includes daily continental breakfast, buffet lunch, morning and afternoon snacks and drinks at breaks, and the Awards dinner on Monday evening. There will be no meeting registration permitted after March 1.

We would like to thank our sponsors for their generous support which has allowed us to keep the student and post-doctoral fellow registration at a low level.

Hotel reservations:

Although the final date for hotel reservations at the special meeting rate for the Crowne Plaza has passed, you may still be able to reserve a room for some of the nights by clicking on this link: Meeting hotel. If you cannot book a room through that site, you can try to book a room at the Crowne Plaza Hotel at their regular rates.Another alternative is the Best Western Sunrise Hotel, 400 North Harbor Drive, Redondo Beach, which is across the street (there are other Best Western Hotels in Redondo Beach, so make sure you book the right one). You will be responsible for payment of your room as the registration fee only covers the facility expenses, continential breakfast, breaks, buffet lunch, and Awards dinner.

Transportation:
The nearest airport is the Los Angeles International Airport. The Crowne Plaza Redondo Beach & Marina Hotel is only a 10 min taxi ride from the airport. All major airlines fly into LAX, so you should have no trouble booking a flight.

Business Meeting:

As required by the constitution, a business meeting will be held during the conference. Reports will be made by the President and the Secretary-Treasurer on the function and the fiscal status of the society respectively.

The process of the election of new officers will be conducted as at the 2009 meeting. This year, a new President-elect, Secretary-Treasurer, and 3 new Council members must be selected. The election will be conducted in the following manner.

The Executive Council (President, President-elect, Secretary-Treasurer, 4 Council members) is charged by the constitution to be the nominating body. Since only active full members may vote or be eligible to be an officer, it is important that the membership be defined for the purposes of the election. As before, there will be no onsite registration for the conference, so the membership list will be complete prior to the actual meeting. A request for suggested nominations for the 3 Council positions will be circulated to the membership by e-mail prior to the actual conference. The suggested individuals will be reviewed by the Executive Council and a ballot established.

Because the office of President-elect requires that the individual in that position is responsible for organizing the next conference of the society, the Executive Council has decided that the nominees for the office should be selected from the existing or previous Council members. These individuals will have been involved in the operations of the society for at least one term and will be knowledgeable about the organization of the conference.

Each registration packet of a voting member will contain a ballot which should be submitted during the conference. The new officers will be announced at the business meeting during the banquet on the final evening of the meeting.
