Welcome to our interactive ergonomic office workstation setup tips! Please follow the self assessment tips below by clicking on an area on the illustration. The related tips will be highlighted in green for you to follow. Many corrections can be addressed by following these steps.
Note: If you have already completed the steps below and you are still having problems 2 weeks after the inital self assessment, you can schedule an appointment for an in-person ergonomic workstation assessment.
- Place the monitor(s) to an arms' length (to outside edge of monitor) from the working position of the employee.
- Center the monitor(s) from the user's working position.
- If you're using dual monitors, position each monitor sightly in a V shape (20-30 degrees).
- The monitor height should be set where the user's eyes, when looking straight forward, hit the screen approximately 1-2" down from the top edge of the monitor.
- Center the keyboard with the monitors. The feet under the keyboard should be set in the closed position.
- Place the mouse directly beside the keyboard.
- If you use the phone frequently, use a headset to avoid cradling the phone on your shoulder.
- Keep paper documents at eye level by using a document holder.
- Tilt the monitor to avoid screen glare and make sure that the monitor is not placed in front of a window or a bright background.
- Set seat height to allow your thighs to be parallel to the floor.
- The feet should comfortably reach the floor or sit on a footrest if the chair has to be higher for a higher desktop.
- Set the chair arm rests so the weight of your arms is supported at all times to avoid muscle strain in the neck and shoulders.
- In the resting position your arms should be level with the keyboard. If the arms are too low,raise the chair and use a foot rest. If the arms are too high, adjust the chair height. You may need to use a pull out tray.
- Adjust the lumbar support of your chair so it is flush against the small of your back. When placed correctly, the lumbar back will also support the shoulders and pelvis (hips) by keeping them in alignment.
- Adjust the chair seat where the front of the seat cushion is not pressing against the back of your knees.
