Research Overview:

Laura F. Hutchins, MD - Dr. Laura Hutchins is a Professor and the Director of the Division of Hematology/Oncology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. She is also the Director of Clinical Research for the Arkansas Cancer Research Center.

Dr. Hutchins received her medical degree from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and has worked as a medical oncologist at that institution since receiving her training. She has dedicated her nearly 30-year career to patient care, clinical research and teaching. As the Hem/Onc Division director she oversees an ACGME accredited fellowship program accommodating 9 fellows for a 3-year program. She has been honored twice with a "Top Doctor" award from Castle Connelly and has received awards for Outstanding Woman Faculty, Distinguished Faculty and Humanism in Medicine.

Dr. Hutchins has contributed to several textbooks and has more than 60 journal publications. Her research interests have focused primarily on melanoma, breast cancer, immunotherapy and biologic therapy for cancer. She currently presides over 15 open clinical trials sponsored by industry, and she is the designated Principal Investigator for all SWOG (Southwest Oncology Group) trials at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Dr. Hutchins' non-industry research efforts include a current Department of Defense grant to investigate the safety, tolerability and immune response associated with a breast cancer vaccine and an NCI project to allow adoption and testing of its caBIG C3D clinical trials database system. Recently Dr. Hutchins completed a 3-year federal HRSA grant to promote the use of telemedicine throughout Arkansas.

Dr. Hutchins additionally shares her experience and expertise on statewide committees. At the appointment of the governor of Arkansas, Dr. Hutchins served as a member on the Arkansas Breast Cancer Research Program Oversight Committee from 2001-2004. In 2004, Dr. Hutchins was appointed by the governor to serve on the state Breast Cancer Control Advisory Board. In January, she became chairwoman of the group.
