The potential to establish a competitive, independent research program is required for candidates at the Assistant Professor level. Candidates for advanced rank are expected to have internationally recognized research programs and active funding.
Faculty in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology have diverse, richly-funded research programs. Areas of expertise include: glycobiology; developmental regulation of transcription; molecular genetics of aging; cancer metastasis; cytotoxicity of anti-cancer agents; molecular toxicology; biotin nutrition; DNA methylation; DNA replication; DNA recombination; and chromosome segregation. The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), the state's principal biomedical research center, has experienced remarkable growth in research infrastructure, faculty, and extramural funding over the past decade. Two new research buildings are scheduled for completion in 2003 and 2004. Core facilities are extensive and include those for proteomics/mass spectrometry and genomics/DNA microarray analysis. Institutional funds are available to enhance existing research strengths and to further promote emerging technologies. Little Rock is a small city (area population ~500,000) with many cultural amenities, a very affordable cost of living, a temperate climate, and beautiful natural surroundings.
