Support Faculty and Staff
Joseph A. Banken, PhD is a licensed psychologist with over 15 years of
experience in the professional practice of behavioral health. He has
treated the majority of behavioral health concerns and illnesses that
occur in adults and children. He has a special interest in women’s
health issues, particularly newborn and pregnancy grieving. In addition
to his work with our support group, he continues to conduct an active
outpatient clinical practice with the Department of OB/GYN. This
practice includes counseling via the telehealth equipment. Dr. Banken
has published extensively in the area of behavioral health.
Shannon Barringer, MS is a certified genetic counselor with the
Departments of OB/GYN and Genetic Counseling. As a genetic counselor
with UAMS for eight years, she has helped families manage the medical
information and emotions that come with a prenatal or neonatal diagnosis
of birth defects and genetic diseases. Many of these conditions can
result in the prolonged illness and/or loss of a baby. Shannon has
completed and provided extensive training in grief counseling through
national bereavement and genetic organizations. She also has experience
counseling across our telehealth equipment.
Kay Morris, RNC is a registered nurse with the Department of OB/GYN
and ANGELS program. She has served as an obstetrics and perinatal
outreach nurse at UAMS for almost 20 years. She also has extensive
experience as an obstetric and neonatal case manager. Kay has also
completed and provided extensive training in grief counseling through
national bereavement and nursing organizations. She has served in
leadership roles for AWHONN, the Association of Women’s Health,
Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses.
