Conference
Summary Statement by Dr. Lowery
The 25th Annual Conference on Perinatal Care focuses
on a central theme, “Continuous Quality Initiatives: Pathways to
Excellence in Obstetrics and Neonatology.” The conference highlights
the importance of continuous quality improvement (CQI) in the fields
of obstetrics and neonatology, as well as in hospitals caring for
this population. We chose this timely theme because medical and
nursing organizations, insurance companies, hospitals, and others
now emphasize the importance of protecting our patients through CQI
mechanisms. Although the often esoteric concept of CQI is easy to
ignore, it is crucial for healthcare providers to embrace, and this
conference is certain to deepen attendees’ appreciation for this
overlooked topic.
The conference includes a keynote address by Dr. William Golden,
UAMS Professor in the College of Medicine, Department of Internal
Medicine, and the College of Public Health. Dr. Golden has devoted
his career to improving the quality of care patients receive through
his active involvement in such organizations as the American College
of Physicians, the Arkansas Foundation for Medical Care, and the
National Quality Forum, while also dedicating membership to the
editorial board of the International Journal for Quality in Health
Care and the AMA Clinical Performance Measurement Committee. Dr.
Golden’s discussion titled keynote: QA, QI, Why? The Argument for
Transparency, will define CQI, discuss its management, and explore
why healthcare providers should be interested in the concept.
Guest speaker Everett F. “Pat” Magann, Chairman of the Department of
Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth,
Virginia, will offer lectures on two hot topics at this year’s
conference: the effects of delivery prior to 39 weeks and management
of shoulder dystocia. Additionally, local experts including
psychiatrists, neonatologists, maternal-fetal medicine specialists,
social workers, and nurses will speak individually and as panelists
on an array of issues affecting obstetrics and neonatology.
Motivational speaker Bobbie Staten, BSN, MPH, RN, will fill the
lunch break with her hilariously entertaining style designed to give
the “jump-start you've been missing.” Bobbie will describe how you
can “charge your battery while you laugh and learn to work smart,
work together, and most importantly, fall in love with your job
again.”
While the focus of this year’s conference is CQI, the conference
agenda integrates several further pertinent topics specific to
obstetrics and neonatology, including a drill on a simulator
mannequin targeted in teaching healthcare professionals how to
manage shoulder dystocia and breech delivery through a hands-on
approach. Also new to the conference this year, the “Stump the
Professor” session allows providers from around the state to present
an obstetric case to a panel of maternal-fetal medicine specialists.
We anticipate a lively debate to ensue with feedback from each of
the experts. The 25th Annual Conference on Perinatal Care with its
unique theme, exciting agenda, and varied speaker list serves as a
conference you simply cannot miss. Join us to learn about trends in
CQI, while networking with the UAMS team and colleagues from around
Arkansas.
