Telemedicine is the delivery of medical care or services from a distant
site. Telemedicine utilizes interactive video and audio teleconferencing
technology that allows a physician at UAMS to see the patient and/or
sonogram and/or colposcopy in real time (almost at the same speed as in
person). When needed, ANGELS utilizes specialized ultrasound equipment
that digitally transfers a sonogram image to UAMS.
The only board certified maternal-fetal medicine specialists and genetic
counselors in Arkansas are at UAMS. ANGELS brings this consultative
expertise to patients and community-based physicians across the state,
saving transportation cost and time. Visit our map
to see all Interactive video sites in Arkansas. In addition,
community-based physicians receive valued support to their primary care
delivery. However, telemedicine does have limits. Some conditions are
best assessed in the clinic in Little Rock. At any time, you have the
option of being seen in Little Rock rather than via telemedicine.
How does a high risk ob clinic visit work?
An appointment is made from the referring physician to the
maternal-fetal medicine specialist at UAMS through the ANGELS Call
Center. On the day of the appointment, ANGELS connects to your
location via cable lines that allow the equipment to “talk to each
other”. A patient will present to the outpatient visit as any
other clinic visit. In addition to the consulting specialists and nurse,
the patient may be seen by a genetic counselor. They will be able to see
and hear each other in real time. The only difference is it will be
conducted over a television-like LCD screen.
