The residency program at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) at Little Rock provides a strong educational and clinical experience for residents in anesthesiology. Our program is an ACGME-accredited, four-year program (PGY1-PGY4). Each post graduate year has 14 available slots, giving our program a total of 56 residents. Our average board pass rate is 83%.

The PGY-1 is termed the Clinical Base year. Rotations are similar to the old free-standing internships. The PGY-2 through PGY-4 (CA-1 - CA-3) are spent rotating through the University Hospital, the Arkansas Children's Hospital, and the John L. McClellan Veteran's Affairs Hospital. During these three years, our residents are exposed to different specialties and subspecialty areas including pediatric anesthesia, acute and chronic pain management, OB anesthesia, neuroanesthesia and cardiothoracic anesthesia.

Our rotation sites administer over 33,000 anesthetics per year in 43 operating and delivery rooms. We provide a didactic teaching program, encourage individual study, and have research opportunities in multiple areas.

The anesthesiology residency program fills positions at the PGY1 level through the National Residents Matching Program (NRMP). If you would like to apply for the UAMS Anesthesiology Residency Program as a PGY-1 for the academic year beginning July 1, please apply through ERAS. We look at the total application with priority given to the following:

  1. USMLE Step 1, Step 2(CK), Step 2(CS) required. Scores above 80 are prefered.
  2. Prior clinical experience is NOT necessary. Most of our residents are recent medical school graduates.
  3. If you do have clinical experience:
        a. We prefer that your clinical experience be within the last five years.
        b. Document any past anesthesiology or surgery experience in home country.
  4. Research in the United States is helpful, but not necessary.

For foreign medical graduates, UAMS will sponsor the J-1 or H-1 visa required for entrance into our residency program.

Before submitting your application, please see the Arkansas State Medical Board Disapproved Schools List.
