Fellowship Pediatric Anesthesiology

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) in affiliation with Arkansas Children's Hospital (ACH) offers this pediatric anesthesiology fellowship. The fellowship itself includes extensive clinical experience providing anesthesia for children for a wide variety of surgical procedures, as well as the supervision and education of junior anesthesia residents. The fellowship provides an outstanding clinical and education exposure to the breadth of pediatric anesthesiology, including pain medicine, cardiac anesthesiology, and critical care medicine. In addition, there is the flexibility to provide additional months of training in pediatric pain medicine or pediatric cardiac anesthesia, as well as active involvement in one of many ongoing
research projects. Our goal is to provide an exceptional clinical experience in pediatric anesthesiology, and prepare the fellow to excel in either a clinical or academic future.

Arkansas Children's Hospital is the only pediatric medical center in Arkansas and one of the largest in the United States serving children from birth to ages 21. The campus spans 29 city blocks and is a 316 bed institution providing primary care facilities for much of central Arkansas as well as tertiary care for an international community. The private, nonprofit healthcare facility boasts an internationally renowned reputation for medical breakthroughs and intensive treatments, unique surgical procedures and forward-thinking medical research-all dedicated to fulfilling their mission of enhancing, sustaining and restoring children's health and development. ACH has been named one U.S. News & World Report's best pediatric hospitals and is also ranked No. 85 on the 2008 FORTUNE 100 Best Companies to Work For®. ACH serves as the pediatric teaching affiliate of UAMS and is the classroom where students, residents and fellows study the pediatric component of all disciplines.

ACH has thirteen operating rooms (including two for cardiac surgery) and three additional procedure rooms in the surgical areas. The Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology faculty members provided 15, 795 anesthetics in 2008. All types of surgical procedures are performed, from neonatal surgery, posterior spinal fusions, and craniofacial reconstructions to the Berlin Heart assist device. The "bread and butter" cases are performed as well, giving the fellow a broad clinical experience that also includes "off-site" anesthetics and sedation for radiology, ECMO, cardiac catheterization lab, as well as opportunities to work in the Burn Center, Arkansas's only burn center, treating severely burned children and adults. The division has an active pediatric pain medicine program for acute and chronic pediatric pain patients, and an active clinical research program.

ACH also houses The PULSE (Pediatric Understanding and Learning through Simulation Education) Center where our fellows have opportunities for training using medical simulation, innovative teaching/assessment and the use of standardized patients. Difficult airway skills, specific critical scenarios as well as opportunities for teaching residents are available.

The pediatric anesthesiology division consists of twenty-eight physicians with fellowship training in pediatric anesthesia; some of whom also have training in pediatrics, pediatric critical care, pediatric cardiac anesthesia or pediatric pain medicine. The pediatric anesthesiology faculty and fellows work with anesthesiology residents from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, an excellent group of CRNAs, and are supported by anesthesia technicians, a fellowship coordinator and other outstanding support staff.

The Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology faculty members are a part of the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, and the pediatric anesthesiology fellowship is accredited by the ACGME.
