Fellowship

The UAMS Department of Anesthesiology is offering the following fellowship opportunity.

FELLOWSHIP Pediatric Anesthesiology

The Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology at Arkansas Children's Hospital has positions available for fellowship training in Pediatric Anesthesia for the 2008 - 2009 academic year. We are interested in candidates entering their CA-4 year or beyond, who have a special interest in anesthesia, pain management, and perioperative care of children. Additional experience or training in pediatrics is desirable, but not required.

The fellowship itself includes extensive clinical experience providing anesthesia for children for a wide variety of surgical procedures, as well as the supervision and education of junior anesthesia residents. The fellowship provides an outstanding clinical and educational exposure to the breadth of pediatric anesthesiology, including pain management, cardiac anesthesiology, and critical care medicine.  In addition, there is the flexibility to provide additional training in pediatric pain management or pediatric cardiac anesthesia, as well as involvement in one of many ongoing research projects. Our goal is to provide an outstanding clinical experience in pediatric anesthesiology, and prepare the fellow to excel in either a clinical or academic future.

Arkansas Children's Hospital is a 280 bed institution providing primary care facilities for much of central Arkansas as well as tertiary care for an international community. There are thirteen operating rooms (including two for cardiac surgery) and three additional procedure rooms in the surgical areas. All types of surgical procedures are performed, from neonatal surgery, posterior spinal fusions, and craniofacial reconstructions to the Berlin Heart assist device. The "bread and butter" cases are performed as well, giving the fellow a broad clinical experience that also includes “off-site” anesthetics and sedation for radiology, ECMO, cardiac catheterization lab, and other services. The division has an active pediatric pain management program for acute and chronic pediatric pain patients, and an active clinical research program. The pediatric anesthesiology division consists of thirty physicians with specialty training in pediatric anesthesia; many of whom also have training in pediatrics, pediatric critical care, pediatric cardiac anesthesia, or pediatric pain management. The pediatric anesthesiology faculty and fellows work with anesthesiology residents from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, an excellent group of CRNAs, and are supported by anesthesia technicians. The Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology is part of the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, and the fellowship in pediatric anesthesiology is accredited by the ACGME.
