Carmelita Pablo, M.D.,
Chair Department of Anesthesiology
JULY 31, 2002 | Dean E. Albert
Reece, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., of the College of Medicine has announced the
appointment of Carmelita Pablo, M.D., as the new chair of the
Department of Anesthesiology.
"I am delighted that Dr. Pablo has agreed to serve as chair of the
department of anesthesiology. She has immense clinical and interpersonal
skills and a broad base of support and respect among the faculty and staff",
Dean Reece said.
"She will
be an excellent leader as we work together to develop new programs in the
College of Medicine and enhance clinical care, teaching and research in the
Department of Anesthesiology."
Dr. Pablo has been interim chair
as well as an associate professor of anesthesiology. She also
holds appointments in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in
the College of Medicine and at the Central Arkansas Veterans
Healthcare System (VA), an affiliate of the University of
Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS).
"It is an honor to have been
chosen for this position from among such fine candidates. Having
been at UAMS for more than 20 years, I feel that I am an
integral part of this institution and the surgical environment.
I look at this as an opportunity to help fulfill the clinical,
educational and research vision for the Department of
Anesthesiology at UAMS College of Medicine, Arkansas Children's
Hospital (ACH), and the VA.
"The department is working hard
toward attaining the vision of the College of Medicine. My
vision is for continued academic enrichment and unparalleled
service. Encompassed in this vision are growth in clinical
practice, with special emphasis on program enhancement and
development; to continue ongoing research and begin new
projects; and to enhance educational training of residents,
students, and nurses through the use of a patient simulator as a
teaching tool."
Dr. Pablo earned her medical
degree at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines,
and was a resident in anesthesiology at Temple University
Hospital in Philadelphia. She was staff physician in Allentown,
PA., before joining the College of Medicine faculty in 1980,
where she first pursued a cardiovascular fellowship.
She has held a wide variety of
administrative and teaching posts at UAMS, including serving on
the Resident Selection Committee and the Resident/Fellow
Evaluation Committee since 1985; as faculty advisor to
anesthesiology residents since 1994; and current service on the
Surgical Services Task Force, the Surgical Services Steering
Committee, and the Surgical Services Board. Dr. Pablo is a
member of the International Anesthesia Research Society,
American Society of Anesthesiologists, and Arkansas Society of
Anesthesiologists. She received the Red Sash Award from the
Class of 2001 of the College of Medicine as a testimony to her
commitment to teaching.
Physicians in the Department of
Anesthesiology staff the operating rooms at three major surgical
centers as well as one-day surgery, labor and delivery, a pain
clinic, the laser center, and the pre-operative center at UAMS
Medical Center.
The department has an accredited
four-year residency program with approximately 50 residents. The
residents experience various sub-specialties in the College of
Medicine at UAMS, the VA, and ACH. Residents receive the
majority of their training in the operating rooms, with
additional training in pain management, the pre-operative
center, laser center, and obstetrics.
Several members of the
anesthesiology faculty have current research grants from the
National Institutes of Health or are participating in sponsored
clinical trials. Dr. Pablo has indicated that she plans new
appointments and initiatives to enhance scholarship in the
department. Dean Reece said today, "I invite members of the
college and others to join me in congratulating Dr. Pablo on her
appointment, and I solicit your support on behalf of Dr. Pablo."
