Family Medicine

Centers

The AHEC-NW Family Medicine Residency has two Family Medicine centers. In March, 1993 the program moved into its main clinic site in Fayetteville. The Family Medical Center is a modern 18,000 square foot facility and is located on an attractive two-acre tract of land on the northeastern border of Fayetteville. The building houses our clinic as well as the offices of the Area Health Education Center and is nestled in surrounding hills in a pastoral-type setting. The facility is designed and equipped to serve as an effective training site for eighteen resident physicians, along with the practices of six of our faculty physicians.

In April, 1996 the AHEC-NW Family Medicine Residency Program opened its second Family Medicine center as the Northwest Family Medical Center in Springdale. This beautiful 8,600 square foot clinic located in the Jones Clinic was developed to meet the demands of a growing population in Northwest Arkansas and a growing interest in our program. This clinic features an excellent electronic medical record system, with plans to use this system at the Fayetteville clinic in the near future. Nine of our residents and three of our faculty physicians have their Family Medicine clinics in this facility.

Hospitals

Washington Regional Medical Center (WRMC) in Fayetteville, Arkansas is the primary admitting hospital for the AHEC-NW Family Medicine Residency Program. With 294 beds and the busiest Emergency Room in the state, this acute care hospital is well-equipped to train our residents. There are no competing residency programs in the hospital, so the amount of "hands on" experience is high. The consulting medical staff work very cooperatively with our residents, providing them with excellent learning opportunities in specialty areas. A new hospital for WRMC opened in August 2002.

In Springdale at the Northwest Medical Center our residency also admits to our own Family Medicine service. This facility complements the AHEC-NW Family Medicine Residency Program and is just adjacent to the Northwest Family Medical Center, our second Family Medicine center.

The Fayetteville City Hospital is an affiliate of Washington Regional Medical Center and houses long-term care, Geri-Psych and Medicare SNF (Skilled Nursing Facility) patients. Our faculty and residents provide care for this group of patients as well.
