Dr. Joanna Maria Thomas graduated from the University of Liverpool School of
Medicine in 1984 and completed an internship in Medicine/Surgery at the
Royal Liverpool University Hospital in 1985. She took her Vocational
Training in General Practice from 1985-1989 at Liverpool University. Upon
immigrating to the United States she subsequently completed her Family
Medicine Residency at the AHEC-NW Family Medicine Program in 1992, serving
as Chief Resident during her final year of residency training. In 1993 Dr.
Thomas joined the faculty of the AHEC-NW Family Medicine Residency Program
by becoming a Clinical Instructor in the UAMS Department of Family and
Preventive Medicine. An Assistant Professor since 1994, Dr. Thomas was
tenured and promoted to Associate Professor in April 2000. Since 2008 she
has served as Assistant Residency Director.
An active clinician, Dr. Thomas sees patients in the Family Medical Center
in Fayetteville 4-5 half-days per week. The author of several papers in
peer-reviewed medical journals, she has also written the chapter on
"Norplant Insertion and Removal" for the first and second editions of
Saunders Manual of Medical Practice edited by Dr. Robert E. Rakel. Dr.
Thomas practices and teaches a broad repertoire of office-based procedures
including flexible sigmoidoscopy and colposcopy, plus treatment modalities
such as cryoconization. Dr. Thomas also serves as the Director of Medical
Student Programs for the AHEC-NW program.
Born in Liverpool, England Dr. Thomas is a naturalized citizen of the United
States. Dr. Thomas and her husband Dave have two sons, Julian and Sebastian;
she and her family live in Fayetteville.
