AHEC - Northwest Library
Library Information
The AHEC Northwest Library was established at the same time the AHEC
Northwest Residency program was founded in August of 1975. Since that time our
mission has been to supply excellent library service and information resources
to support the education and patient services of all AHEC Northwest programs.
These programs include family medicine residents, medical students, pharmacy
students, nursing students, and CHRP students. We also serve the health care
professionals in our 6 county area (Benton, Boone, Carroll, Madison, Newton,
Washington).
Since June of 2003 the Northwest library has had 2 locations. The main location
which is larger and houses most of the print collection is at the AHEC campus on
Joyce Blvd. A satellite library with a smaller core collection is maintained at
WRMC, and is used extensively by the residents. Both sites have access to the e-resources available via the UAMS website. Some of these resources are
MEDLINE
via PUBMED,
OVID Online with full-text capability,
MDCONSULT,
DynaMed and UP TO
DATE. The library also has a print collection of books and journals in the
fields of medicine, nursing, allied health, and consumer education.
Some of the services provided by the library staff are:
searching of medical
literature, locating materials (books, journals, and/or audiovisual materials),
initiating and filling interlibrary loan requests,
providing a literature
update/reading list, assisting in research or
training using the various medical databases and providing
consumer health information.
Circulation services allow books to be checked
out for a two week period with one renewal. For more information on the
library's policies and procedures, please
contact the library staff.

Services Provided to Patrons
Literature Searches: These
are usually done for residents, practicing physicians, or hospital
personnel, when they need information for diagnostic purposes, patient care,
or educational events. The library staff excels in searching our various
medical databases such as MEDLINE via PUBMED, OVID Online with full-text
capability, MDCONSULT, DynaMed and UP TO DATE.
Document Delivery/Interlibrary Loan: If the library
does not own or have electronic access to the particular journal from which
requested articles may be copied or printed, we can obtain the information
through a network providing interlibrary loans. There is a cost for these
services for some non-affiliated individuals.
Literature Updates: The
library staff provides several services to enable physicians and nurses to
keep abreast of the current medical literature. One service is a Current
Review reading list of articles compiled from the Library collection. A
table of contents from publications individually selected may also be
received. Then the physician or nurse has only to let the staff know their
selections, and they will be sent.
Training Services: Any
individual or group who would like help learning how to do medical or
nursing literature searches has only to contact the library staff and we
will be glad to arrange a training session.
Consumer Health
Information: Our library is
primarily a medical library, but we do have a consumer health collection.
The public is welcome to browse any material available in the library and
copies may be made at a cost of $.10 per page. We will also be glad to
assist individuals in learning to find appropriate information on the
Internet.
Circulation: Affiliated
physicians, health professionals, and students may borrow from the medical
and nursing collection. The materials may be borrowed for a two week period
with a possible two week renewal. Copies may be made from any journal in our
collection of nearly 150 journals.
