The state of Arkansas
suffered a long-standing shortage of health care providers during the mid-20th
century.In response to this
shortage, especially in outlying rural areas of the state, the Arkansas AHEC
(Area Health Education Center) Program was established in 1973.This was made possible through collaboration among the Arkansas
Governor's Office, the State Department of Human Services, the Arkansas General
Assembly, and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.Within three years, six centers were in place to serve the state,
including Fayetteville (AHEC-Northwest).
Today AHEC-NW services a
six-county region made up of the counties of Benton, Carroll, Boone, Washington,
Madison, and Newton.Its goals are
aligned with the overall general AHEC program goals of
Providing health care professional students the opportunity to train in rural
underserved areas, thereby encouraging future rural practice choices.
Enhancing a professional environment in rural areas through academics, library services, and
continuing education offerings, which ultimately results in provider retention
and strengthening community health care systems.
