Area Health Education Center - Northeast has sought excellence since it's creation in the mid seventies. The first group of residents began their training in July 1980. Since that time AHEC NE has graduated over 120 family medicine physicians, the majority of which have established practices in northeast Arkansas and across the state. AHEC NE is housed on the campus of St. Bernards Medical Center in the Ben E. Owens Diagnostic Treatment wing and the Annex building. The primary teaching facility accommodates 20 residents, teaching professionals, healthcare and clerical staff in the roles of teaching, patient care and system support management respectively.

In addition to a modern teaching clinic, AHEC NE offers veteran healthcare services in a clinic commonly referred to as a Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC). This is located on the mezzanine level of the same treatment wing as the primary teaching clinic. This clinic offers state of the art digital x-ray, mental health services and a full range of primary care services. CBOCs are contracted services with the Department of Veteran Affairs and one of its medical centers for primary healthcare services in that medical centers catchment area. For AHEC NE, that catchment area is the counties of northeast Arkansas. AHEC NE has been the provider of choice for the Department of Veteran Affairs in northeast Arkansas since 1999.

AHEC Northeast enjoys significant support through the two affiliated hospitals in Jonesboro, St. Bernards Medical Center and NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital. These institutions not only provide a rich environment for physician training and education but also serve as a resource for all manners of program development and support. Another significant local partner is Arkansas State University. ASU teaches many of the students that eventually become medical students and physicians in training at AHEC NE With this shared educational objective, ASU often hosts AHEC teaching events i.e. A Day in the Life program.

AHEC Northeast has offered a health career recruitment program that began four years ago to augment the existing M*A*S*H* program. AHEC Northeast is the only AHEC in the state that has expanded youth outreach programs to include presentations taken to the classrooms, several one-day hands-on programs for high school seniors, and efforts to improve MCAT preparation and performance for pre-medical students. The pre-medical support component has been effective in improving area students’ MCAT scores and the number of ASU students being accepted into UAMS College of Medicine. Helping students develop their career goals will help promote a brighter future for the citizens of Northeast Arkansas.

Community partnerships offer enriching experiences for our students while contributing to be betterment of our community and fellow Arkansas’. Examples of these partnerships are the Community Church Health Center, Center on Aging, outreach to local elementary schools to teach healthy life choices, support and participation with local organizations like Rotary and Lyons clubs and the Medical Reserve Corp to mention just a few.

Other educational opportunities at AHEC NE are rotations for medical, nursing, mental health and social work, phlebotomy, pharmacy and other allied health students.
