SECTION: SUPPORT SERVICES
AREA: PROPERTY SERVICES
SUBJECT: CARDBOARD RECYCLING PROGRAM

PURPOSE

The purpose of this policy is to notify departments within the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) of the procedures and practices associated with the campus cardboard recycling program, and to develop a comprehensive program. This policy is also designed to ensure that specific roles and responsibilities are defined.

POLICY

To ensure that the cardboard recycling program reduces the solid waste produced by UAMS and reduces the cost of solid waste disposal.  Any UAMS employee who willingly violates this policy will be subject to disciplinary action.

PROCEDURES

1. Property Services will place cardboard recycling bins in specific locations on the campus to collect cardboard. The bins will be marked to identify them as for cardboard only. No garbage will be allowed into the bins.
2. Clinical & Campus Housekeeping personnel and department personnel placing cardboard into the bins will break the cardboard down and flatten before placing into the bin.
3. Property Services will empty the bins on a schedule reflecting the bin usage and capacity.
4. Unscheduled service may be requested for full bins by contacting Property Services.
5. Property Services will review bin collections monthly to make adjustments to the collection schedule.
6. Cardboard collected from the bins will be placed into the cardboard crusher, compressed and as needed, and bailed. The bails will be placed behind the Distribution Center until collected for recycling by cardboard recycler.
7. Property Services will be responsible for the materials need to run the program
