Biographical Sketch

    Philip A. Kern, M.D., Professor of Medicine at UAMS and Associate Chief of Staff at the John L. McClellan Memorial Veterans Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas received a B.S. in chemistry and biology from Tufts University in 1974, and a M.D. from New York Medical College in 1978.

    After completing his Fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Dr. Kern began his first faculty position at UCLA/Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

    Dr. Kern rose through the academic ranks from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor in Los Angeles between 1984 and 1995. Since 1995, he has also been serving as Professor of Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and the Associate Chief of Staff in Research at the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System.

    Dr. Kern's research in lipid metabolism, diabetes, and obesity has resulted in more than 60 peer-reviewed manuscripts and has been funded by a variety of agencies, including the NIH, VA, American Diabetes Association, the American Heart Association, and the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. In 1992, Dr. Kern was elected into the prestigious American Society for Clinical Investigation.
