Chancellor's Faculty Teaching Award
Distinguished Recipients, 2010-11
Quinnie Jo Young, M.A., M.Ed.
Associate Professor, Department of Imaging and Radiation Sciences
College of Health Related Professions
Quinnie Young received her Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Technology from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. She received a Master of Education in Adult Education and a Master of Arts in Social Gerontology from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Ms. Young has provided consistently outstanding educational experiences to students in the Department of Imaging and Radiation Sciences for 38 years.
Ms. Young describes her straight-forward teaching philosophy:
…provide educational opportunities for each person in a class, in an environment that is challenging but non-threatening, with the goal of fostering learning that will not only contribute to the achievement of their professional expectations, but will serve as anchor and foundation for any learning experience the student attempts after they leave UAMS. Students must be expected to participate in their learning and teachers must be equally committed to assisting and supporting that learning in every way.
Graduates of the Radiologic Imaging Sciences program are the most appreciative group in noting Ms. Young’s impact on them in their professional lives. She is remembered as tough, fair, and upon graduation the favorite instructor. One such recent graduate recalled, “Mrs. Young has mastered an effective method of teaching the same complex material and information to many different people with different learning styles.” She stimulates independent thinking while promoting synergy among students in her classes.
In her 38 years at UAMS, Quinnie Young has taught hundreds of students, created or revised fourteen courses, served as the academic advisor to over 150 students, and served her college, university, profession, and community actively through her leadership and work on numerous committees.
