Chancellor's Faculty Teaching Award
Distinguished Recipients, 2010-11
Jeffrey L. Clothier, M.D.
Professor, Department of Psychiatry
College of Medicine
Dr. Clothier was the winner of the College of Medicine’s Master Teacher Award this year. It is a singular honor and reflects a significant history of educational excellence. Perhaps the best way to describe the reasons Dr. Clothier received the College’s Master Teacher Award, and why the College felt that he should receive the Chancellor’s teaching award is to paraphrase a recent letter about Dr. Clothier written by his Chair, Dr. G. Richard Smith:
“Since he was recruited here to direct our Behavioral Sciences course in 1990, Dr. Clothier has been the singularly most important educator from our Department of Psychiatry. In his first year as course director, he was the first runner-up for the Golden Apple award for the M2 class and started his run of Red Sash awards that has continued without interruption for the last 20 years. He developed a novel and fun senior elective entitled “Great Men with Sick Minds”, which he ran for 17 years (he also cooked dinner for the class). He developed a new psychiatric emergency evaluation clinic which he ran for about a dozen years, during which he supervised psychiatry residents and junior clerks. He has won several departmental education awards including the Emil Eckard award for being the best teacher in the residency program, and the Bob Shannon award for contributions to psychiatric education for the State of Arkansas. Because of the excitement that Jeff has generated, UAMS began recruiting medical students into psychiatry at a rate previously not seen and significantly better than the national rate. Many of our mid-career faculty members list Dr. Clothier as the teacher that had the most impact on not only their decision to pursue psychiatry, but also on their decision to stay at UAMS.”
