Frequently Asked Questions

Question:  Do the pilot studies allow for salary support on the budget?

Answer:    All faculty salaries (PI, Co-I, etc) are not allowed. These awards will support salary (plus fringe) for all research (excluding PI and Co-Is) and support staff listed in the budget, including full time, post doctoral faculty who are engaged in research.

Question:   Can the budget support biostatistical help?

Answer:     If you are requesting biostatistical support for the conduct of your study, the TRI places a cap on the allowable effort of 3% (5.2 hours/month). All pilot studies are eligible for a statistical consult pre-submission at no cost. Percent/time effort must be reported on your budget justification, but salary support is not needed.

Question:  Are unpaid collaborators allowed on the pilot studies?

Answer:    Yes, you may include unpaid collaborators.

Question:  Are there indirect costs on the TRI Pilot Studies?

Answer:    No. The budget should represent direct costs only. Indirects are not allowable.

Question:  Is travel allowed in the budget of the TRI Pilot Studies?

Answer:    Only travel directly related to conducting the study is allowed. Scientific travel to present results, etc is not allowable.

Question:  Can pilot study funds be used to purchase equipment and/or computers?

Answer:    Equipment required to conduct the pilot study can be purchased using pilot study funds. Computers are not an allowable cost.

Question:  Can faculty members serve on more than one pilot study?

Answer:    Faculty can serve on more than one study (e.g. PI on one and Co-I on another); however, no faculty member can serve as the PI for more than one, funded study.

Question:  Can faculty who are supported by the Arkansas CTSA award apply for pilot studies?

Answer:    Yes.
