Health Services Research

Core Description

The Health Services Research (HSR) program component of the Arkansas Translational Research Institute (TRI) brings together key scientific, clinical, policy, and community stakeholders to facilitate translational research designed to identify pathways for improving health care within Arkansas. HSR is a field of scientific inquiry that uses social, behavioral, and epidemiologic research methods to study the organization, financing, and delivery of health care.

The TRI’s Health Services Research component strengthens and enhances the existing capacity for HSR in Arkansas by creating a forum through which multiple stakeholders can share ideas and resources and work collaboratively to address common research development goals.

To accomplish the UAMS TRI HSR's missions, the TRI has acquired a 10% sample of the proprietary administrative claims 'LifeLink' from Pharmetrics, Inc., to facilitate exploratory research projects and to train graduate students and new investigators in Health Services Research. The LifeLink™ Health Plan Claims Database is comprised of commercial health plan information obtained from managed care plans throughout the United States. It includes information collected by the medical plans from medical service providers to facilitate the adjudication and payment of health insurance benefits on behalf of the plan’s enrolled members. It is fully adjudicated medical and pharmaceutical claims for over 61 million unique patients from over 98 health plans across the U.S. The database includes both inpatient and outpatient diagnoses (in ICD-9-CM format) and procedures (in CPT-4 and HCPCS formats) as well as both retail and mail order prescriptionrecords. Available data on prescription records include the National Drug Code (NDC) as well as the quantity of the medication dispensed.

More information about this new data resource for TRI researchers is available in the User Guide and Data Dictionary and Pharmetrics LifeLink Webinar on April 27 2010

Researchers who are interested in accessing the IMS LifeLink data for HSR projects now have a guide for doing so. Click here for more information about LifeLink.
