Health Services Research

Specific Aims

Aim 1: Increase access to and utilization of existing health care data resources that can be used to anchor multidisciplinary health services research within Arkansas. The HSR component will assist investigators in obtaining research-quality data that reflect the content and cost of care delivered in community practice settings across the state.

Aim 2: Review and monitor clinical practice patterns for opportunities to improve adoption of efficacious clinical interventions. Data from Aim 1 will be used to review clinical practice patterns and identify clinical domains that exhibit large gaps and disparities in adherence to desired interventions in order to inform studies aimed at improving adoption of these  interventions.

Aim 3: Stimulate interdisciplinary collaboration in the design and conduct of health services research studies within Arkansas. This will increase the number of UAMS investigators actively conducting HSR and the number of funded HSR studies at UAMS and its partner institutions.

Aim 4: Increase collaborative health services research activities that directly involve Arkansas health care delivery and financing organizations in the conduct, translation, and application of research activities. At least 10 new studies will be initiated involving partnerships with the Arkansas health care organizations, including Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Arkansas Department of Human Services as the state’s Medicaid agency, Arkansas Department of Health, Arkansas Community Practice Networkand the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System.

Aim 5: Increase the application of recent methodological advancements in health services research in studies conducted at UAMS and partner institutions. This will enhance the ability of UAMS investigators to apply research methods from the field of implementation science, which develops and tests strategies designed to speed the translation of evidence-based interventions to clinical practice. Similarly, the HSR component will promote and support the use of recent methodologic advancements in other areas, such as quality measurement, comparative effectiveness trials, and assessments of cost-effectiveness and clinical practice efficiency.
