Epidemiology

Specific Aims

Aim 1: Develop expert teams of epidemiologists to advise, consult, and collaborate regarding the use of epidemiologic research methods in clinical and translational research. The epidemiology faculty forms the core of two Epidemiology Expert Teams, one specializing in molecular epidemiology methods and applications and the other in community-based epidemiology methods and applications. The Epidemiology faculty work closely with other TRI program components to promote the use of epidemiologic data to set priorities for research and interventions.

Aim 2: Enhance, maintain, and disseminate data at the community level that can be used by communities and research partners to document health status at the state and county levels. UAMS epidemiologists have created and continue to expand a database of existing data available at the community (county) level. The database currently contains data for each of the state’s 75 counties and for the state overall on more than 150 distinct indicators of health. A Web-based query system will make the data readily accessible to a broad range of researchers and constituent groups.

Aim 3: Develop expertise in the use of epidemiologic methods and data to evaluate translational research and intervention activities at the community level. We will use data gathered in Aim 2 as the basis on which to determine and evaluate priority areas of health for research and intervention, as well as geographic areas of the state that may be in greatest need or provide appropriate settings for research and intervention.
