Education and Career Development

Specific Aims

Aim 1: Build a collaborative educational infrastructure that ensures integration of basic, clinical, and community sciences. Leaders of this component are developing and managing a program that assures all students and trainees have well-balanced, appropriate educational and mentoring opportunities.

Aim 2: Transform educational programs and increase extramural funding for training. Several UAMS innovative educational programs are being transformed to offer degree programs in clinical/translational science (graduate certificate, MS, PhD). In addition, UAMS is  increasing extramural funding for all training programs, especially T32 and K- and F-type mechanisms. Pathfinders will ensure that all trainees have a broad-based understanding of research design, community engagement, regulatory issues, and research ethics.

Aim 3: Provide career development training to promote professional skills that enhance scientific productivity and mentorship/leadership. This component enhances skills in fundamental career areas in order to increase the research productivity of postdoctoral scholars, subspecialty fellows, and junior faculty. Career development training includes grant/manuscript writing and professional presentations. Grant writing training is led by the UAMS Office of Grants and Scientific Publications. Leadership and team building skills are taught by personnel from various TRI components.

Aim 4. Expand the number and diversity of trainees/mentors who benefit from TRI educational programs. Ensuring broad access to TRI educational programs is key; thus, the TRI strives to increase the number and quality of trainees from under-represented minority groups and assure full participation by female trainees. The emphasis on diversity includes efforts to increase the number of female mentors and mentors from under-represented minority groups.
