Clinical Research Services Core
Clinical Research Services Core Units

Primary CRSC Outpatient Facility. The CRSC is
currently located in the
Institute on Aging (2,000 sq ft). We are excited to be in the planning stages of
new primary space for outpatient studies on the fourth floor of the Central Building in the heart of the UAMS campus. This excellent space is easily accessible to
patients from parking decks and is connected by climate-controlled walkways to
the new hospital building, the Cancer Institute, the Jones Eye Institute, the
Outpatient Centers, the Psychiatric Research Institute, The Wilson Education
Center, the CAVHS, and basic-science research buildings.
CRSC Inpatient Unit.
Currently the CRSC has two inpatient beds in the Universitys short stay unit.
When construction is complete, research inpatients will be admitted to the Fourth Floor of the Central Building where we will have two Residential rooms and two sleep lab study rooms plus several pieces of state-of-the-art equipment and other rooms for procedures.
Clinical Research Services Core Satellites
In addition to the primary CRSC outpatient and inpatient units, the CRSC boasts six satellite units. These units are specialized for particular needs of our participants and researchers.
Pediatric Clinical Research (PCRU) Unit and the
Pediatric Pharmacology Research Unit (PPRU). At present, more
than 20 investigators have protocols involving the 3,600 sq. ft. PCRU. For more
information on these units visit:

Psychiatric Research Institute (PRI) Unit. The new Psychiatric Research
Institute (PRI) at UAMS is one of the most innovative psychiatric treatment and
research facilities in the nation. One of the unique aspects of PRI is the
neuroimaging center, which contains a 3 Tesla MRI system. The PRI also includes
40 inpatient beds; several-beds may be used for research inpatient units. The
PRIs two research divisions are the Center for Addiction Research and the
Division of Health Service Research. For more information on the PRI and its research visit:

Winthrop P.
Rockefeller Cancer Institute. The Rockefeller Cancer Institutes 15 specialty
clinics and medical services are active in cancer patient care, many of which
are internationally recognized for treatment and research excellence. Our
research nurses, coordinators, and dietitian assist investigators in the Cancer
Institutes many programs and clinics. When the new tower expansion for the
Rockefeller Cancer Institute is complete (expected in June 2010), a full CRSC
satellite unit will be established in Institutes 2,000 sq. ft. Infusion Center.

Donald
W. Reynolds Institute on Aging Unit. Several high profile research programs are
in mature stages in the Reynolds Institute. These include basic, clinical, and
health services research. These programs address the major aspects of aging that
are most threatening to functional independence, including 1) Alzheimers
disease and other dementing disorders; 2) frailty caused by loss of muscle mass
and bone fragility that leads to loss of balance and falls; 3) poor nutrition
and lack of exercise that play important roles in development of frailty and,
very likely, increase risk for development of Alzheimer's disease; and 4) lack
of adequate health services available to many of our elderly. Many studies of
the Reynolds Institutes studies in the elderly cannot be easily duplicated
elsewhere. This unit has a combined 2,000 sq. ft. outpatient and exercise
facility within the Nutrition, Exercise & Metabolism Laboratories. The current
CRSC main research facilities and TRI administration are temporarily located in
the Reynolds Institute while awaiting the move to permanent space in summer
2009. For more information on the Reynolds Institute and its programs visit:

Metabolic Kitchen Unit. The metabolic kitchen is a kitchen dedicated to
research support. The metabolic
kitchen staff provide clinical
research participants with specialized foods or meals that are scheduled and
prepared in accordance with research protocols. A research dietitian designs
menus to meet the needs and specifications of the research protocol and study
participants. These may include general, nutrient-controlled, weighed, or
metabolic meals as needed.
