UAMS Police Department Safety Tips
Crime Prevention Tips While Driving:
· WHEN DRIVING
·
1)
If someone
follows you and is persistent or becomes obscene, slow down and pull over to the
right. Hopefully they will pass you and you can then write down the license
number and
report it to the appropriate police agency as soon as possible.
2) Park in the best-lit parking lot nearest to where you are going.
3) If you are trapped in your car, honk your horn in quick short bursts. This will attract people’s attention.
4)
Make sure
that all of the car doors are locked whenever you leave your vehicle. When
returning to
your car, have your keys ready so you can enter your car quickly;
and be aware of your surroundings.
If you have to look into a purse or a pocket
to find them, it takes extra time and you lose sight of what is
around you, which could allow someone to sneak up on you.
5)
As you
approach your car, look underneath to make sure no one is hiding there. Before
you enter your car
look to see if all of the doors are locked or if there are
any uninvited passengers in the back seat or on the floor.
If your door locks
are not the way you left them, or you see someone inside, leave the area as
quickly as
possible and notify your
Police Department at 686-7777.
6) Do NOT pick up hitchhikers.
Crime Prevention Tips While Walking:
· WHEN WALKING
1) Never walk alone if at all possible
2) If you cannot find someone to walk with you, call the Police Department 686-7777 for an escort.
3) If you absolutely have to walk alone, walk on well lighted walkways and plan your route ahead of time.
Avoid places where attackers might hike (spaces between parked cars, overgrown shrubs, etc.) Remember,
it is best to walk facing traffic.
4) If anyone follows you, look confident and let them know you are aware of their presence. Don’t be polite
or engage in conversation. If they continue to follow you, cross the street and/or change directions.
Use your cell and call the Police Department 686-7777.
5) If someone in a car follows you and is persistent or becomes obscene, write down the license number and
call the Police Department 686-7777.
6) Ask your Police Department for assistance if you are frightened or concerned.
Safety Tip: Started from a charger left in the lighter

Pictured is a 2007 Chevy Suburban destroyed as a result of an electrical fire..
This fire resulted from leaving an I-phone charger/docking station plugged into the car outlet. The charger unit overheated and started a fire, while parked in a residential garage. The owners of the vehicle were VERY fortunate that they accidentally found the fire, at 11pm, before going to bed and before it spread to the house.
This is a reminder that ALL in-car chargers should be unplugged when the vehicle is unattended. As electronics have proliferated in our lives and vehicles it is not unusual to find multiple 12-volt receptacles in vehicles.
