A research paper from the UAMS Center for Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Diseases was featured on the cover of the February 3 issue of Cell Metabolism. Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism faculty co-authors include Elena Ambrogini, Ph.D.; Maria Almeida, Ph.D.; Marta Martin-Millan, Li Han, M.D.; Joseph Goellner, M.S.; Robert Weinstein, M.D.; Robert Jilka, Ph.D.; Charles O’Brien, Ph.D.; and Stavros Manolagas, M.D., Ph.D.

Laura F. Hutchins, MD                    Dorothy Miles PhD                        (Hematology and Oncology)

Drs. Hutchins and MIiles were honored by NIH/NCI for work the cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid (caBIG). Other honorees included T. Kieber-Emmons PhD; M. Yared MD; and S. Gray).

Sara G. Tariq, MD
(General Internal Medicine)

Dr. Tariq was awarded the American College of Physicians Herbert S. Waxman Award for Outstanding Medical Educator.

 

 

Paulette Mehta, MD
(Hematology Oncology)

Dr. Mehta was appointed President of the Association of VA Hematologists/ Oncologists (AVAHO), Effective 10/1/2009. Term is one year. 

 

William Golden, MD
(General Internal Medicine)

Dr. Golden was appointed to the ABIM Test-writing Committee.

 

 

Jawahar Mehta, MD, PHD
(Cardiovascular Medicine)

Dr. Mehta recently received a VA Merit grant renewal, for his study, "The role of TGFbeta in reperfusion injury." The award marks 27 years of continuous VA funding for Dr. Mehta.

Sarah Beth Harrington, MD
(Hematology Oncology)

Dr. Harrington was selected as a national participant in LEAD (Leadership Education and Academic Development Program) with the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

Conrad McKown, Arkansas state worthy president of the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 60, and his wife, Georgianna, present Stavros Manolagas, M.D., Ph.D., with a $2,500 donation for diabetes research.

Stavros Manolagas, MD, PhD (Endocrinology and Metabolism)

Dr. Manolagas, Division Director of Endocrinology, accepted a $2,500 donation from the Fraternal Order of Eagles. The donation is to be used for diabetes research.     Read more...

Charles O'Brien, PhD 
(Endocrinology and  Metabolism)

Dr. O'Brien was selected to serve as member of the Skeletal  Biology Development and Disease Study Section, Center for Scientific Review at NIH. Term begins July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2013.

Robert Safirstein, MD (Nephrology)                         

Dr. Safirstein was selected to serve on the Board of Consulting Editors of the Journal of Clinical Investigation. His is a two-year renewable term beginning April 2009. 

Barry Uretsky MD and Joe Bissett MD            

(Cardiovascular Medicine)

Drs. Uretsky and Bissett are responsible for a $46,000 award from the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions. The award is to benefit the cardiovascular interventional fellowship program, and in particular, to help fund research by the fellows and   their individual faculty mentors. 

Criteria considered for the award included evaluation of the quality of clinical training and faculty, number and breadth of cases, research, and time and effort of faculty.
