SUBJECT: MICROWAVE OVEN SURVEY POLICY

PURPOSE
The purpose of this policy is to notify departments within the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) of the procedures to be followed for conducting microwave oven safety surveys on campus.

SCOPE
All UAMS employees, faculty and staff.

PROCEDURE
(1) The Department of Occupational Health and Safety will survey a microwave oven if a user suspects a problem with an oven or it has been damaged.
(2) It is particularly important that the oven doors close properly and that there is no damage to the door, hinges, latches, door seals and sealing surfaces. Notify Occupational Health and Safety (686-7803) of any microwave ovens that have been damaged.
(3) Any ovens which are found to leak in excess of 5.0 milliwatt per square cm. at 5 centimeter from the surface will be taken out of service. The owner is responsible for repair, replacement and disposal.
