BASIC ROTATION GUIDELINES FOR FIRST YEAR RESIDENTS
Academic Year 2007-2008
OBSTETRICS
PGY I (Three 4 weeks blocks)
You will be assigned to a private obstetrician as well as OB patients
in the FPC Clinic.
Rotation will largely be determined by private obstetrician.
Follow OB patients in FP clinic, regardless of rotation throughout
pregnancy and be present at delivery.
Perform all circumcisions on FPC deliveries if PCP is unavailable.
Follow FPC OB patients on Labor & Delivery, contact OB attending and
patient’s PCP.
Must scrub as first assistant on all C-sections no matter who the
operating physician is.
Be available on Labor and Delivery to assist any private obstetrician
who asks. This is a must.
Check nursery daily to see if any FP has any new babies.
Attend Noon Conference every day.
Call attending prior to the 1st day of rotation to set up meet.
Round on your own in-patients.
PEDIATRICS
PGY I (Two 4 week blocks)
Are required to round on private pediatrician’s in-hospital patients
every day. 2nd year residents round in the nursery.
Go to Pediatrician clinic on the days you do not have your own
clinic. Normal hours are 9:00am – 12:00 and 1:30 – 5:00.
Will be required to perform C-Section resuscitations on a rotating
basis. Will have 2nd year resident backing you up. Respiratory therapist
will also be present.
Attend Noon Conference every day.
Call attending prior to 1st day of rotation to set up meet.
Round on your own in-patients. For circumcision, c-section assist and
other procedure.
EMERGENCY MEDICINE
PGY I (One 4-week block)
Will be required to complete Sixteen (16) 12-hour shifts during
month. –
Contact Dr. Skowronski prior to 1st day of rotation.
Shifts need to be spread between days, nights and weekends evenly.
Should try to work with each attending at least once.
Will see ER patients – NOT FPC patients.
Patients seen, presented to ER doctor, work-up began and appropriate
actions taken.
Round on your own FPC in-patients.
Attend Noon Conference every day.
ORTHOPEDICS
PGY I (One 4-week block)
Will be assigned to private orthopedist.
Will be required to attend surgeries and go to orthopedist clinic.
Other duties dictated by attending.
Attend Noon Conference every day.
Round on your own in-patients.
SURGERY
PGY I (One 4-week block)
Will be assigned to private surgeon.
Specific requirements dictated by assigned surgeon.
Definitely required to attend surgery daily and clinic as instructed
by attending.
Round with attending on his/her in-patients, Other duties dictated by
attending.
Attend Noon Conference every day.
Round on your own in-patients.
CARDIOLOGY
PGY I (One 4-week Block)
Will be assigned to private cardiology attending
Usually meet around 7:00 am and read EKG’s
Other daily duties dictated by attending, (see consults, hang out in
cath lab etc.)
Attend Noon Conference every day.
Round on your own in-patients.
INTERNAL MEDICINE
PGY I (Four 4-week blocks : 2 blocks back to back)
Meet at 7:00 am sharp Monday – Friday for morning report
(presentation of overnight admissions and a chance to ask questions
about your in-patients)
After morning report, disband and round individually.
Unit rounds at 8:30 with Dr. Attwood
After unit rounds may go on with daily responsibilities (rounding,
clinic, etc.)
Will have day call during these months in which you see FP patients
in the ER and carry the Code pager
Teaching rounds at 11:00 daily in the AHEC conference room.
Attend Noon Conference every day.
