Gary Miller, M.Ed., Director of Outreach and Education at AHEC Southwest,
was selected to receive the 2008 Andrew Nichols Award for Social Justice, at
the National AHEC Conference in Denver. The awards committee noted his
“extraordinary commitment to
the medically and socially underserved populations.” Gary’s efforts have led
to programs addressing the needs of the growing Hispanic community, as well
as African-American women and children in the region. Through his
leadership, AHEC Southwest has provided Howard and Sevier counties in
Southwest Arkansas with community health workers, a weekend medical clinic,
an after-school program, and medical interpreters. Gary has worked to secure
diverse funding sources to sustain and expand these programs, and personally
attends and helps with most outreach events.

Dr. Phillip Elangwe, 3rd year resident at AHEC Fort Smith, was selected as
this year's winner of the Joycelyn M. Elders Community Service Award. Dr.

activities, including presentations to local schools, churches, civic, and
medical groups and for countless volunteer hours at a local indigent
clinic. The award recipient receives a $1,000 honorarium and a framed
certificate. The selection committee includes resident and faculty
representatives from the Graduate Medical Education Committees of the AHEC
and
College of Medicine.
AHEC Northeast Receives Health Information
Technology Award
AHEC Northeast was one of 60 health care facilities across the state to be
recognized for their commitment to excellence. The AHEC received the Health
Information Technology Award, for a clinical research project that compared
adherence to diabetes management guidelines
in two electronic health record systems used in its
Family Medicine Clinic. The award was presented during
the Arkansas Foundation for Medical Care’s 15th Quality Conference in May at
the Hot Springs Convention Center.

graduating UAMS senior who has been actively involved in AHEC rotations and
activities during medical school.
This year’s award was presented to Dr. Thinh "Paul" Nguyen at the AHEC

AHEC Fort Smith. As a 4th year student, he performed three rotations with the
AHECs, including an acting internship in family medicine at AHEC Northwest, and
an Internal Medicine Primary Care Selective and Senior Elective in Rural Family
