AHEC
residencies help retain UAMS College of Medicine Graduates in Arkansas,
ultimately improving the supply and distribution of family physicians
throughout the state. Arkansas AHECs offer 44 first-year residency
positions; combined with 6 positions at the Department of Family and
Preventive Medicine program in Little Rock, a total of 50 first-year family
medicine slots are available statewide. For the 2007-08
academic term, 50% of the graduating medical class chose to
pursue residency training in a primary care specialty; which includes Family
Medicine, Pediatrics, General Internal Medicine, Med/Peds, and OB/Gyn; 14%
(19/136 students) chose a residency in family medicine. Of the 19 students
who chose family medicine, 11 students (58%) matched with AHEC residency
programs.
In 2007-08, the AHEC Residencies
provided training for 130
Family Medicine residents, with 45 graduates completing a 3-year
AHEC residency to become board eligible in Family Medicine.
