Every
summer, hundreds of high school students in Arkansas
don surgical scrubs or lab coats at Area Health Education Centers
(AHECs) and community hospitals in order to learn more about
health
careers. With a special emphasis on rural youth, the Medical Application
of Science for Health, or M*A*S*H, has allowed teenagers to experience the
real world of medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, and allied health in
hopes that they will pursue a health career.
Since 1988, 5,079 students have participated in summer M*A*S*H programs.
More than 68% of the participants are from hometowns with a population of
10,000 or less, and 18%
represent minorities.

27% respondents (101/368) who
completed and returned the 2007 Fall MASH Survey.
