Dear Alumni,
As Dean of the
College
of Medicine,
it is my
pleasure
to announce
to you that
2004 marks
the 125th
anniversary
of the founding
of the College
of Medicine.
We are planning
many exciting
activities
to commemorate
the 125th
Anniversary
and we hope
you will
join us
in this
Celebration.
Milestones have
a way of
inspiring
celebration
and reflection.
The 125th
Anniversary
is certainly
a time for
reflection
on our history,
a celebration
of our achievements,
both past
and present,
and a time
to look
forward
with anticipation
to the future.
Our quasquincentennial
(the word
for 125)
theme is
In Relentless
Pursuit
of Excellence,
Every Day
certainly
aptly describes
the work
we do each
day that
helps shape
healthcare
for future
generations.
This Anniversary
is a celebration
of the achievements
of the literally
thousands
of men and
women who
have built
the College
of Medicine
over the
past 125
years. Their
inspiration
and dedication
is the foundation
on which
the College
of Medicine
is built.
The 125th
Anniversary
will be
celebrated
over an
18-month
period,
from the
founding
of the school
and conclude
with the
celebration
of the first
graduate.
I want to share
a few of
the 125th
Anniversary
plans with
you. One
of the most
exciting
events will
be our 125th
Anniversary
Celebration
Dinner.
This dinner
will be
held at
the Peabody
Hotel in
conjunction
with the
Dean’s
Annual CME
Conference
on October
2, 2004.
(Mark your
calendars
now! You’ll
hear much
more about
this event
in the coming
months.)
The cornerstone
for the
125th Anniversary
Celebration
is the creation
and induction
of the College
of Medicine’s
Hall of
Fame, into
which distinguished
alumni and
faculty
will be
inducted
at a dinner
that evening.
We ask that
you nominate
your most
admired
and outstanding
of the COM
student
and residents
and faculty
for this
honor by
visiting
the College
of Medicine
Web site
at www.uams.edu/com
for a nomination
form or
call 501-526-7414.
The College
of Medicine
Web site
will contain
a calendar
of events
throughout
the Anniversary
celebration
such as
lectures,
regional
alumni lunches,
history,
photos,
seminars,
etc. A festive
and celebratory
atmosphere
will encompass
all the
UAMS campus
with banners
and flags
proudly
saluting
this milestone
Anniversary.
Hopefully by now
each of
you have
received
the first
edition
of University
of Arkansas
Medicine,
our new
bi-annual
College
of Medicine
magazine.
The next
issue will
be late
spring and
a special
125th Anniversary
issue will
highlight
the members
of the Hall
of Fame.
We hope
you enjoy
hearing
about all
the exciting
news, faculty
features
and highlights
in general
from the
College
of Medicine.
You will hear much
more about
our Celebration
plans over
the next
year. Please
check the
College
of Medicine
Web site
often for
news and
events and
don’t
forget to
send us
your nominations
for the
Hall of
Fame. We
hope you
will join
us for the
festivities
which will
provide
many opportunities
to reconnect
with alumni
and friends
in the UAMS
community.
In the years
since its
founding,
the College
of Medicine
has been
the birthplace
of many
major research
achievements,
and home
to physicians
and scholars
who have
shaped healthcare
today as
we know
it. The
College
of Medicine
is proud
of what
physicians
like you
have achieved
in the years
since its
founding
and of the
accomplishments
of those
who have
worked and
studied
here. Congratulations
to each
of you.
Sincerely,
E. Albert Reece,
M.D., Ph.D.,
